A couple of months ago, when I launch my blog I knew I needed to build an email list. Since then, my email list helps me generate a growing income month after month. If you don't have an email list yet or if you didn't put all your energy to grow your list I highly suggest that you put email list on top of your to-do list.
An email list will not only help you monetize your blog but also help you grow your blog and social media presence. All the bloggers and business owners that I follow by email, I also follow them on their social media platforms, read their blog regularly and recommend them to my client.
This is how powerful an email list can be. If you create great content to your email list those people will be your fans and help you grow your online presence.
What is a good conversion rate?
So the first question popping into your head is probably: what is a good convert rate?
First, let me define the word conversion.
A "conversion" happens on a web page when a visitor decides to take the action from your "call-to-action" that you set for the page.
The call-to-action can be to subscribe to your email list, to fill out a form, to buy your product or service.
The conversion rate is the number of people who took action. If you have 100 visitors and 20 of them subscribe to your email list, you have a conversion rate of 20%.
A landing page will definitely have a better conversion rate that an opt-in box in a blog post. The landing page is a not distraction place where the only purpose is to gain new subscribers.
An opt-in box on a website can get 1 to 5% of convert rate and a good convert rate for a landing page is anything above 20%. Anything less than that can probably use so improvement.
As you can see all my opt-in convert well, but this didn't happen magically. I work hard and constantly improve my landing pages.
Make it your priority
When I started my blog, even if I was committed to growing my email list as fast as possible, I never could image growing this fast. In fact, after more than a week, I had only 2 or 3 persons that sign for my list. I knew that I needed to make some change. I was so focused on making my website pretty, growing my social media presence that I was neglecting my goal.
If you don't put your email list on top of your priority, you will probably miss your goal to grow your email list. Your email list should always be one of your priority because this is how you will be able to monetize your blog.
Every morning, I start my day with a task that will help me grow my email list. This can be to create a new freebie, to promote an opt-in or my blog where I have different freebies for my readers.
Know your audience
This is the most important point to create an email list and a high convert rate, you need to know your audience. This sound cliche but I see so many bloggers create a freebie without thinking about what their audience wants.
When you just start in business this can be hard to find know your audience and what they want. To help you, you can use targeted Facebook group and do a quick survey to get to know them. You can do a Facebook poll and ask them some feedback.
Create an irresistible opt-in
One of my most popular opt-in is my Facebook groups day-by-day promo spreadsheet. This opt-in convert well because this answer my audience needs. Most of my audience are new bloggers juggling between their full-time job and their blog. Most of them have a limited time to spend promoting their blog and I create something that helps them save hours and help them in their need of growing their traffic.
What is your audience needs?
Create an opt-in that will help them with their problem. Make the opt-in easy to gain results in a short time.
You don't want to create a 30 pages guide. Most of your subscribers will not read the whole thing. You want instead to create something that they can gain fast result.

Create a landing page that converts
One of the most important factor to increase your email list, after your opt-in is your landing page.
A landing page is a webpage specifically design with one call-to-action. The only purpose of this page is to gain new subscribers.
If you are serious about growing your email list, I highly recommend using Leadpages. Since I use them I increase my email list by 70%.
No matter if you decide to use an opt-in box on your site, a landing page or both, you need to attract your visitor toward those subscription boxes.
One of the main strategies to increase your opt-in rate is with your catchy headlines. You want a headline that will speak directly to your audience needs. You only have a couple second to grab their attention and to let them know what they can expect if they enter their email address.
Your call-to-action is also very important. Your call-to-action can be "Register now", "Get started now"
Promote your opt-in
The way you promote your opt-in can affect your conversion rate. If you are promoting to a targeted audience on Facebook groups, you will have more of your ideal audience landing on your page. If you promote your offer with a Facebook ad, your conversion rate might increase because you are targeting the exact person who needs this freebie.
What to do if you don't have good converting rate?
If your opt-in don't convert the way you expected, you don't necessary need to create a new freebie. Sometimes a new headline, change the color or the text can dramatically increase your conversion rate. I'm always changing and testing my headlines to try to increase my rate.
