How to get more people sign up for your email list

How to improve your opt-in rate and rapidly grow your email list.

A couple of months ago when I launched my blog I knew I needed to build an email list. Since then, my email list has helped me generate a growing income month after month. If you don't have an email list yet or if you aren’t  putting much energy into growing your list, then I highly suggest that you do as soon as possible.

An email list will not only help you to monetize your blog but also to  grow your social media presence. All the bloggers and business owners that I follow by email, I also follow on social media, read their blogs regularly and recommend them to my clients.

This is how powerful an email list can be. If you create great content for your email list those people will be your fans and help you grow your online presence.  

What is a good conversion rate?

So the first question popping into your head is probably: what is a good convert rate?

First, let me define the word conversion.

A “conversion” happens on a web page when a visitor decides to take the action from your "call-to-action" that you set for the page.

The call-to-action can be to subscribe to your email list, fill out a form, or purchase your product or service.

For example if you have 100 visitors and 20 of them subscribe to your email list, your  conversion rate would be 20%.

A landing page will definitely have a better conversion rate than  an opt-in box in a blog post. The landing page is a distraction-free place where the only purpose is to gain new subscribers.

An opt-in box on a website can get a conversion rate of 1 to 5% whereas a good convert rate for a landing page is anything above 20%. Anything less than that can probably use some improvement.

As you can see all my opt-ins convert well, but this didn't happen magically. I worked hard and constantly improve my landing pages.

Make it your priority

When I started my blog, after more than a week, I had only 2 or 3 persons that sign for my list. I knew that I needed to make a big  change. I was so focused on making my website pretty, growing my social media presence that I was neglecting my goal.

If you don't put your email list as a  top priority, you will probably miss your goal to grow your email list. Your email list should always be one of your priority because this is how you will be able to monetize your blog.

Every morning, I start my day with a task that will help me grow my email list. This can be to create a new freebie, promote an opt-in or my blog where I have different freebies for my readers.  

Know your audience

The  most important aspect  of  creating  an email list and getting a high conversion  rate, is  knowing your audience. This may sound cliche, but I see so many bloggers create a freebie without thinking about what their audience wants.

You  can use targeted Facebook groups to do a quick survey and get to know them. You can do a Facebook poll and ask for  some feedback.

Create an irresistible opt-in

One of my most popular opt-in is my Facebook groups day-by-day promo spreadsheet. This opt-in converts well because it provides an answer that my audience needs. Most of my audience are new bloggers juggling between their full-time job and their blog. Most of them have a limited time to spend promoting their blog and I created something that helps them to save hours of time and grow their traffic.

Make sure that  the opt-in provides tips that are easy to implement and gain results in a short time.

You don't want to create a 30-page guide because most  of your subscribers will not read the whole thing. You will also be wasting your own time as a result.

Create a landing page that converts

One of the most important factors to increase your email list, after your opt-in, is your landing page.

A landing page is a specifically designed webpage with one call-to-action. The only purpose of this page is to gain new subscribers.

If you are serious about growing your email list, I highly recommend using Leadpages. Since I use them I increase my email list by 70%.

No matter if you decide to use an opt-in box on your site, a landing page or both, you need to attract your visitors toward those subscription boxes.

One of the main strategies to increase your opt-in rate is by using  catchy headlines. You want a headline that will speak directly to your audience needs. You only have a few seconds to grab their attention and let them know what they can expect if they enter their email address.

Your call-to-action is also very important. Your call-to-action can be "Register now," "Get started now,"etc.

Promote your opt-in

The way you promote your opt-in can affect your conversion rate. If you are promoting to a targeted audience in Facebook groups, you will have more of your ideal audience landing on your page. If you promote your offer with a Facebook ad, your conversion rate might increase because you are targeting the exact person who needs this freebie.

What to do if you don't have good converting rate?

If your opt-in doesn’t  convert the way you expected, you don't necessarily  need to create a new freebie. Sometimes a new headline, different colors or text can dramatically increase your conversion rate. I'm always changing and testing my headlines to try to increase my conversion rate.
